ECAT Guide: UET Entry Test Pattern, Subjects and Preparation
How the UET Engineering College Admission Test (ECAT) works: 100 MCQs, subject combinations, marking and a preparation plan.
The Engineering College Admission Test (ECAT) is the entry test for engineering admissions at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore and many other engineering institutes in Punjab. A good ECAT score is essential for a strong engineering merit.
ECAT pattern
Recent guides describe the ECAT as follows:
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Total MCQs | 100 |
| Time | 100 minutes |
| Total marks | 400 (4 marks per correct answer) |
| English | 10 MCQs (comprehension) |
| Each main subject | 30 MCQs |
Subject combinations
| Student background | Subjects |
|---|---|
| Pre-Engineering | Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English |
| ICS | Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, English |
Negative marking: recent sources report no negative marking, but older years had a penalty for wrong answers. Check the official UET admission instructions for your year before the test.
How to prepare
Mathematics: the most important and most time-consuming subject. Focus on functions and limits, differentiation and integration, analytical geometry, vectors, trigonometry, sequences and series, and quadratic equations. Practise shortcuts and solve against the clock.
Physics: vectors, motion, work and energy, circular motion, waves, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism and modern physics. Know your formulas and units.
Chemistry / Computer: for Chemistry, revise stoichiometry, gases, atomic structure, bonding, equilibrium and organic basics. For Computer Science, revise the FSc computer syllabus.
English: read short passages daily and answer comprehension questions quickly.
8-week study plan
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1-3 | Revise FSc Maths and Physics chapter by chapter |
| 4-5 | Chemistry/Computer and English, plus mixed practice |
| 6-8 | Full timed mock tests, at least 3 per week, and revision of weak topics |
Tips
- Speed matters: 100 MCQs in 100 minutes means about one minute per question.
- Do not get stuck on a long calculation. Skip it and return later.
- Revise formulas every day in the final two weeks.
