How to Prepare for Government Job Tests in Pakistan: Complete Guide
Updated 17 Oct 2026
A step-by-step plan for Police, PPSC, FPSC, NTS and other written tests: what to study, how to practise and how to avoid common mistakes.
Most government job tests in Pakistan (Police, PPSC, FPSC, NTS and many others) start with a written MCQ test. The good news: the same core subjects appear in almost every test, so smart preparation helps you for many jobs at once.
Step 1: Read the official advertisement carefully
Before you study anything, read the advertisement on the department's official website. Note down:
- Eligibility: age limit, qualification, domicile and any physical requirements
- Syllabus and test pattern (number of MCQs, marks and time)
- Last date to apply and how to pay the fee
Never trust job details shared on WhatsApp or Facebook without checking the official website.
Step 2: Learn the common subjects
| Subject | What to focus on |
|---|---|
| General Knowledge | World capitals, currencies, organisations and their headquarters |
| Pakistan Studies | Freedom movement, important dates, geography, constitutions |
| Islamiat | Basic beliefs, pillars of Islam, Ghazwat, Caliphs, Quran facts |
| English | Synonyms, antonyms, tenses, articles, prepositions, correct sentences |
| Urdu | Famous poets and writers, their books, grammar basics |
| Mathematics | Percentages, ratio, average, profit and loss, simple interest, speed |
| Computer | Full forms, shortcut keys, MS Office basics, internet terms |
| Everyday Science | Human body, vitamins, planets, units, common chemicals |
| Current Affairs | Important national and international news of the last 6 months |
Step 3: Practise MCQs every day
- Read MCQs subject by subject on our MCQs page.
- Take one timed mock test daily to build speed. Most tests give less than one minute per question.
- Take the Daily Quiz every morning; it only takes 5 minutes.
- Save difficult questions with โ and revise them before the exam.
Step 4: Track your weak subjects
Open My Progress after a few tests. It shows your score in each subject. Spend extra time on any subject below 60%.
Step 5: The last week before the test
- Revise your saved questions and short notes, not new books.
- Take 2โ3 full mock tests under real time limits.
- Sleep well the night before. A fresh mind remembers more.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Studying from random PDFs full of wrong answers
- Ignoring English and Maths because they feel difficult; they carry many marks
- Not reading the question fully; watch for words like NOT and EXCEPT
- Spending too long on one hard question; mark it and move on
Tip: Consistency beats long study sessions. One focused hour every day for a month is better than ten hours the night before.
