MDCAT Guide: Pattern, Subject Weightage and Preparation Strategy
MDCAT explained for medical college aspirants: 180 MCQs, subject-wise weightage, preparation strategy and common mistakes to avoid.
The Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) is required for admission to MBBS and BDS programmes in Pakistan. It is conducted under the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC). Your MDCAT score makes up a major part of your merit, so every mark counts.
Pattern and subject weightage
Recent announcements describe MDCAT as 180 MCQs with no negative marking, split as follows:
| Subject | MCQs | Weightage |
|---|---|---|
| Biology | 81 | 45% |
| Chemistry | 45 | 25% |
| Physics | 36 | 20% |
| English | 9 | 5% |
| Logical Reasoning | 9 | 5% |
| Total | 180 | 100% |
The test date, duration and format (paper-based or computer-based) are announced each year. Always check the official PM&DC notice and syllabus for your year.
What to study
- Follow the official PM&DC syllabus. Questions come from the FSc (Intermediate) curriculum covered in the official syllabus document.
- Biology (45%) carries the most marks. Master cell biology, biological molecules, enzymes, human physiology (circulation, respiration, excretion, nervous system), genetics and evolution.
- Chemistry (25%): physical chemistry (moles, gases, equilibrium, pH), atomic structure and bonding, and organic chemistry reactions.
- Physics (20%): units, motion, forces, work and energy, waves, electricity and modern physics. Practise the formulas.
- English and Logical Reasoning (10% together): quick marks. Practise grammar, vocabulary and simple reasoning puzzles.
A 3-phase preparation plan
- Concept phase: read your textbook chapter by chapter and make one-page notes per chapter.
- MCQ phase: solve chapter-wise MCQs right after each chapter. Note every mistake.
- Mock phase (last 4-6 weeks): take full-length timed tests twice a week and revise weak chapters in between.
Common mistakes
- Spending too much time on Physics numericals while Biology carries more marks.
- Studying from random notes instead of the official syllabus and textbooks.
- Not practising under time pressure.
- Leaving questions blank. With no negative marking, attempt every question.
