FIA Recruitment Guide: Selection Stages, Test Subjects and 6-Week Preparation Plan
A practical guide to the usual FIA selection stages, the subjects to study and a six-week plan. Always confirm eligibility and test pattern in the official advertisement.
About the FIA
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is Pakistan's federal law-enforcement agency, working under the Ministry of Interior with its headquarters in Islamabad. It was established under the FIA Act of 1974 and investigates offences such as human trafficking, immigration fraud, cybercrime, corruption and financial crime.
The FIA recruits for many posts, including constables, Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASI), Sub-Inspectors, Inspectors and ministerial staff. Which posts are open in a given year, the age limit, the qualification and the physical standards all change from advertisement to advertisement. Always read the latest official advertisement before you apply.
Typical selection stages
For most uniformed posts the process follows a familiar pattern. The exact stages, marks and the testing body are announced in each advertisement.
| Stage | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Application | Online or as described in the advertisement, by the last date |
| Physical test | Running, height and chest standards for field posts, as listed in the ad |
| Written test | Multiple-choice questions, usually on general ability subjects |
| Interview | Personality, communication and basic law-and-order awareness |
| Verification | Documents, character and medical checks |
Candidates who miss the physical standards are normally not called for the written test, so start physical practice early.
What the written test usually covers
Do not rely on a fixed syllabus from old forums. Use this list as a study guide and compare it with the syllabus in your advertisement.
- General Knowledge and Current Affairs: Pakistan, world organisations, books, capitals, awards.
- Pakistan Studies: Pakistan Movement, constitutions, geography, important dates.
- Islamiat: Seerah, the Caliphs, pillars of Islam, basic Quranic knowledge.
- English: Synonyms, antonyms, tenses, prepositions, idioms, comprehension.
- Urdu: Grammar, opposites, plurals, famous writers and books.
- Mathematics and Reasoning: Percentages, ratios, speed-time-distance, number series, coding-decoding.
- Computer Basics: Hardware, software, MS Office, internet and cyber safety.
Practise each of these on our site: General Knowledge MCQs, Pakistan Studies MCQs, Islamiat MCQs, English MCQs, Mathematics MCQs and Analytical Reasoning MCQs.
A 6-week preparation plan
Weeks 1-2: Build the base
- Revise Matric-level maths and English grammar.
- Read one Pakistan Studies chapter every two days and note down dates.
- Start a light daily physical routine: brisk walk, jogging and stretching.
Weeks 3-4: Practise MCQs
- Solve 30 to 40 MCQs every day, mixing subjects.
- Keep a notebook of mistakes and revise it every weekend.
- Increase running distance and time slowly. Avoid injury.
Weeks 5-6: Test yourself
- Attempt a full timed mock test every two days on the Daily Quiz and exam practice pages.
- Revise current affairs of the last six months from reliable newspapers.
- Practise interview answers aloud (see below).
Interview tips
- Be polite, confident and honest. Maintain eye contact and sit straight.
- Know your own details: domicile, education, family background and why you want to serve in the FIA.
- Learn the basic role of the FIA and what a law-enforcement officer must do: follow the law, protect citizens and stay incorruptible.
- Stay calm if you do not know an answer. Say so honestly instead of guessing wildly.
Documents to keep ready
- CNIC and a few passport-size photographs
- Domicile and educational certificates (originals plus attested copies)
- Any experience or quota certificates, if you are applying under a quota
- Fee receipt or challan, if the advertisement requires one
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying after the last date or with an incomplete form.
- Trusting social-media posts instead of the official advertisement.
- Ignoring physical fitness until the test is announced.
- Paying anyone for a "guaranteed job". Recruitment is by merit and fraud is common; never pay agents.
- Memorising answers without understanding the concepts.
Final advice
Follow the official FIA channels and our Jobs page for new openings. Be consistent every day: a short, regular study routine and a steady fitness routine beat last-minute cramming. Check the age limit, qualification and test pattern in the official advertisement, because these differ by post and year.
