Health Department Job Interview: Common Questions with Model Answers
Common interview questions and model answers for clinical technician, paramedical and other health department posts in Pakistan, with tips on documents and preparation.
Health departments, teaching hospitals and district health offices in Pakistan regularly advertise posts for clinical technicians, dispensers, nurses, ward clerks and other paramedical staff. After the written test, most shortlisted candidates face an interview panel. This guide lists common questions with simple model answers so you can prepare in your own words. Always check the official advertisement of your department for the exact selection process, because the weight given to the test and the interview differs from one employer to another.
How the interview usually works
A panel of two to five officers, often including a medical superintendent or department head, checks your original documents, asks about your qualification and experience, and tests your attitude towards patients. Many panels also ask a few practical questions from your trade.
- Bring original certificates, CNIC, domicile, experience letters and photocopies.
- Dress neatly and arrive early.
- Greet the panel, sit only when invited and speak clearly.
- If you do not know an answer, say so honestly instead of guessing.
General questions with model answers
1. Tell us about yourself
Give a short answer: your name, qualification, institute, any internship or work experience and why you want this post. Keep it under one minute and end with your interest in serving patients.
Model answer: "My name is ... I completed my diploma in ... from ... and did my clinical training at ... I am hard-working and punctual, and I want to serve in a public hospital where I can use my skills to help patients."
2. Why do you want to work in the health sector?
Model answer: "Health work is a direct way to serve people when they need help most. I enjoy practical work and teamwork, and a government hospital gives me the chance to learn from experienced staff while serving the public."
3. What will you do if a patient is rude or angry?
Model answer: "I will stay calm, listen to the complaint, speak politely and try to solve the problem within my duty. If it is beyond my authority, I will inform my supervisor instead of arguing."
4. How do you handle pressure during an emergency?
Model answer: "I follow the instructions of the senior doctor, prioritise the most urgent task, work in coordination with my team and avoid panic. Afterwards I report what I did honestly."
5. What is the importance of hand hygiene and infection control?
Model answer: "Washing hands before and after contact with patients, using gloves, masks and clean equipment, and disposing of sharps and waste in the correct containers help prevent infections from spreading to patients and staff."
6. What would you do if you make a mistake in your duty?
Model answer: "I will inform my supervisor immediately, help correct the mistake and learn from it. Hiding a mistake in a hospital can harm a patient."
7. Why should we select you?
Model answer: "I have the required qualification, I am willing to work in shifts and I take responsibility seriously. I will follow the rules of the hospital and treat every patient with respect."
Professional ethics questions
| Question | Key points for your answer |
|---|---|
| What is patient confidentiality? | Do not share a patient's medical details with outsiders without authority. |
| Will you work night shifts and on holidays? | Hospitals run around the clock, so answer yes and show willingness. |
| How do you treat poor and rich patients? | Equally, according to medical need. |
| What would you do if a senior asks you to do something wrong? | Politely refuse to break rules and report through the proper channel. |
| What is the role of teamwork? | Doctors, nurses and technicians depend on each other for safe care. |
Technical questions (examples)
Panels often ask basic questions from your own field. Revise your textbooks and practical notes. Examples:
- Name the common instruments or equipment you used during your training and their purposes.
- What safety steps do you follow before collecting a sample or using a machine?
- What are the normal vital signs you check on a patient (pulse, blood pressure, temperature, respiration)?
- How do you sterilise reusable equipment?
Answer only what you are sure about, and describe what you actually did during practical training.
Domicile, quota and documents
Government posts often have district or provincial quotas, minority and disabled quotas, and age relaxation rules. These rules are different for every advertisement, so read the official advertisement carefully and do not rely on rumours or social media posts.
Preparation checklist
- Revise the syllabus of your diploma or degree, especially practical topics.
- Practise answering the questions above aloud, in simple English or Urdu as the panel prefers.
- Keep your documents in a file in the order listed in the advertisement.
- Read about the hospital or department you are applying to.
- Avoid giving long speeches; stay honest, polite and confident.
